Masterchef used to be such a gentle programme. Then at some point a few years ago it ‘Went Large’ (and went CamelCase), and it’s been high drama and personal journeys ever since. The contestants seem to live in fear, cowering from the judges’ approach and sensing that their futures can be decided by a frown, a nod or a glare from John Torode.
